A house to live in, with a doorway at ground level and two windows with small panes.

Building the house step by step

Step 1: raise the walls of the house

Step 1: raise the walls of the house

Stand your Kapla upright and close together to make the four walls: these are the uprights. To leave the openings, lay planks flat between them — two for a window, three for the door — then take them back out.

💡 Astuce : three openings across the front: the door in the middle, a window on either side. The back wall stays solid.

Step 2: lay the base course

Step 2: lay the base course

Run planks on edge all around the bottom of the walls, in front of and behind the uprights: that's the base course. Stop on either side of the door, so it reaches down to the ground.

Step 3: prepare the windows with 4 Kapla

Step 3: prepare the windows with 4 Kapla

In each window opening, lay two Kapla flat, side by side: that's the sill, the ledge at the bottom of the window.

Step 4: raise the first window panes

Step 4: raise the first window panes

On each base built in the previous step, stand three Kapla on edge: one at each side, and one in the middle. The middle one is called the mullion.

💡 Astuce : the mullion has to land exactly on the joint between the two planks underneath.

Step 5: close the first row

Step 5: close the first row

Lay two planks flat across the uprights: that's the lintel, the bar at the top. Your first two panes are done.

Step 6: build the second row

Step 6: build the second row

The lintel becomes the base for the next row; once again, stand 3 Kapla on it, exactly as you did the first time.

Step 7: close the second row

Step 7: close the second row

Close it off with 2 planks laid flat. Each window now has four panes!

Step 8: finish the windows with 6 Kapla

Step 8: finish the windows with 6 Kapla

The windows aren't done yet! One last time, stand 3 Kapla on edge in each window. They reach the very top of the wall, and each window has its six panes.

Step 9: lay the wall plate

Step 9: lay the wall plate

Lay Kapla on edge all the way around, balanced on the uprights: that's the wall plate, and it's what spans the door.

Step 10: make the ceiling of the house

Step 10: make the ceiling of the house

Cover the whole house with planks laid flat, pressed against one another and set crosswise. That's the ceiling, and the roof will rise from it.

Step 11: start the roof

Step 11: start the roof

Stack two rows of planks flat on the ceiling, dropping the two outer ones each time: the roof narrows like a staircase.

Step 12: finish the roof with 4 planks

Step 12: finish the roof with 4 planks

One more row of three Kapla, then a last plank on its own at the top. Your house is finished!

Frequently asked questions

This model takes 114 Kapla: 29 for the upright walls, 10 for the base course, 30 for the two windows, 8 for the wall plate, and 37 for the ceiling and the roof.

From age 6 on their own. The delicate move is the mullion in the middle of each window: it has to land exactly on the joint between the two planks underneath, otherwise the lintel laid on top rests on nothing.
