Build the scales step by step
Step 1: lay the base
Lay two planks flat, end to end and lined up. This is the base, the wide foot that keeps the scales from tipping.
Step 2: raise the post
In the middle of the base, lay four Kapla in two touching columns, running up your drawing. This is the post of the scales.
Step 3: lay the beam
At the top of the post, lay two rows of four planks end to end. This is the beam, the long bar that carries both pans.
Step 4: hang the first pan
Under one end of the beam, draw a triangle: two sloping planks meeting at the top and one flat underneath. This is the pan, where you put what you weigh.
Step 5: hang the second pan
Make the same triangle under the other end of the beam. Both sides match: your scales are balanced!
Frequently asked questions
They take 20: 2 for the base, 4 for the post, 8 for the beam and 3 for each pan.
A flat model lies straight on the table, with nothing that can fall. It is ideal from age 4, to learn to draw with Kapla before building upwards.
