Build a big Kapla ferry, in natural wood or in colours, with its pointed bow, its decks of windows for the passengers, the captain’s bridge and its funnel! This hard model takes precision and lots of Kapla: 199 planks in all. It can be built from age 8.

Build the Kapla ferry step by step

Step 1: draw the hull of the ferry

Step 1: draw the hull of the ferry

Stand 18 Kapla on edge for the hull, the body of the ship: 6 end to end on each side, 1 perpendicular to close the back. At the front, 2 slightly turned ones per side close the bow, the tip of the ferry, and 1 slips into the middle.

💡 Astuce : lay the bow Kapla end against end, without overlapping them.

Step 2: build up the hull of the ferry

Step 2: build up the hull of the ferry

Stack 2 rows of 18 planks, exactly like the first one: 36 Kapla in all.

Step 3: lay the crossbars

Step 3: lay the crossbars

Lay 13 Kapla flat, perpendicular to the hull, from one side to the other, about every half Kapla: these are the crossbars, they hold the 2 sides together. Cover the bow with 5 flat planks.

Step 4: the belt of the ship

Step 4: the belt of the ship

Stand a last row of 18 Kapla on edge, like the first 3: this is the sheer strake, the belt running around the ferry.

Step 5: the decks at the front and back

Step 5: the decks at the front and back

At the back, lay 4 Kapla flat side by side, perpendicular to the hull, and 6 at the front: these are the decks, the floors of the ship. Cover the bow again with 5 planks. Leave the middle empty.

Step 6: the passenger windows

Step 6: the passenger windows

In the middle, stand 20 Kapla on edge, perpendicular to the hull, with the thickness of 2 Kapla between 2 planks: these are the windows. At the front, lay 4 Kapla flat on the deck.

Step 7: the passenger ceiling

Step 7: the passenger ceiling

Cover the windows with 20 planks laid flat, along the ship: 4 rows of 5 Kapla side by side.

Step 8: the upper deck windows

Step 8: the upper deck windows

Do it again on top with 15 Kapla on edge, set back a little at the front and the back: this is the upper deck.

Step 9: the upper deck ceiling

Step 9: the upper deck ceiling

Cover these windows with 15 planks laid flat: 3 rows of 5 Kapla side by side.

Step 10: the captain’s bridge

Step 10: the captain’s bridge

At the front of the upper deck, stand 5 Kapla on edge, then cover them with 5 flat planks. This is the bridge, the cabin the captain steers the ferry from.

Step 11: the funnel of the ferry

Step 11: the funnel of the ferry

Behind the bridge, stack 5 levels of 2 Kapla flat side by side: this is the funnel. Cast off!

Frequently asked questions

It takes 199: 90 for the hull and its crossbars, 15 for the decks, 84 for the cabins and the bridge, and 10 for the funnel. A box of 200 Kapla is enough!

No, it builds very well in natural wood only. For the coloured ferry, you need 24 red Kapla, 36 dark blue, 102 white, 4 black, and 33 natural ones for the crossbars and the decks. The Colours / Wood button shows both versions.

From 8 years old. The hull can be built alone, row by row. For the bow and the windows, better to have an adult nearby: Kapla on edge need a steady hand.
